Panchmukhi Ganesh is considered as a symbol of four directions and one universe. Gajanan, the desk-five face, is called Pancham Ganesh. Panch means five. Mukhi means the mouth These five are also symbols of Five Ksas in the Vedas, the origin, development, destruction and the motion of the soul are explained through the Panchakosh. These five sacraments are said to be five kinds of body.
